The series 'Skyverse' is an exploration of existentialism, contemplating existential solace as an alternative to existential dread or anguish. Here, the freedom that accompanies meaninglessness is conceptualised as the ultimate opportunity for expression, both individually and collectively as communities. It invites us to consider what curated-sanctuary looks like and the levels at which this is possible.
The series reflects upon elements such as introspection, inner-trust, presence, coexistence, connection, radical acceptance, and/or escapism. These ideas are expressed via 35mm film photographs of empty sky treated with heat, water, smoke, salt, citrus, and other elements, resulting in emulsion melting and vivid dreamlike colours. This process is done by hand and what develops is embraced without digital editing, mirroring the dual forces of randomness and choice. Images throughout the series feature existential voids, moments of destruction, vibrancy, organic shapes, and fluidity.
Images from the 'Skyverse' series were selected as part of the hero festival identity for Midsumma 2025. Depicting deconstructed pride flags, 'Skyverse' represents our organic collective identities standing together.
The artwork was used across the festival including the 'Ride with Pride' tram in collaboration with Yarra Trams, billboards across the city and at Melbourne Airport, t-shirts, festival passes, social media, and the festival program.
Melanie is a creative with interests across writing, photography, painting, music, and film who lives and works on Wurundjeri country. As a photographer, she is drawn to all things analogue, collecting vintage cameras and shooting on film. She particularly enjoys experimental photography, altering images non-digitally to create surreal effects. After studying painting, Melanie became curious about how abstraction could be explored via analogue photography. She has exhibited her work regularly via group shows and 'Skyverse' at Lupine Studio is her first solo exhibition.
Beyond visual art, Melanie also writes. She began her career in the music industry as a lyricist and topliner, with highlights including penning a song that charted in the top twenty, winning an independent music award, and writing music for film and television. She has studied fiction at Faber Writing Academy and poetry at Varuna, The National Writers' House. In 2023, she was a hot desk fellow at The Wheeler Centre.
Melanie currently works at a local creative agency in the leadership team, as a photographer, and as a creative director. She also has a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. While expressed in many different forms, hopeful, visceral, synesthetic exploration of human experience is at the heart of all Melanie does.
