Reflecting on the concept of 'the uncanny' in photography, the Blue Moon series conflates the experimental photography process with alchemic processes, conjuring the surreal through distorted images of the full and blue moon. 35mm film photographs were affected at two stages: 1) During exposure, via kaleidoscope and prism lens filters, and through multiple-exposures at varying time points across two moons that fell within the same Gregorian calendar month; and 2) post-exposure, alchemically with a potion of blue anil, witch's salt, a four-leaf-clover, citrus, heat, smoke, and light. This resulted in melted film emulsions, colour leaks, and luminous textures infused through images of multiplied and layered moons. Images are presented as developed, without further digital distortions, embracing the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of the analogue process, where images remain veiled until the final stage. Blue Moon challenges the notion that reality may be captured, or even observed at all, instead exploring the medium of light and how it can be obscured. The series leans into both the tangible, tactile, and physical, as well as the untouchable, unseen, and unknown, which we attempt to interpret, integrate, categorise, or name, for example, as ‘blue’.
